A village, a riverside walk and a quirky cream tea

15th Aug 2012

I’ve been trying for weeks to make it to Jane’s Cream Teas, but she’s only open on a Sunday 12-5.30, in the little village of Kirtlington (between Woodstock and Bicester). A few times the weather has thwarted me. Or the kids are moaning about moving anything heavier than the remote control and I’m not up to the fight (and, er, the Olympics  has been on).

Now I’ve just looked at my diary and realised that I have things booked in for the next four Sundays solid (grrrrr), so I’m not going to be able to check it out personally before September. September!!!

My arteries are aching just looking at this

BUT. I don’t want you to miss out on something that could be superfun so I thought I should blog it anyway.

I was first told about this place by the lovely Rebecca who owns Paton Place in Bicester (see review here) – she and her husband both raved about it to me. With a bit of digging I realised that Jane is pretty well known in Oxfordshire - she owns an award-winning small-holding and lives on a narrow boat on the Oxford Canal adjacent to the farm and pops up on TV and in mags from time to time. From the pics, you’ll see that it’s a quirky, vintagey, slightly rough-and-ready, but relaxed kind of vibe – loads of character, with the quality of the food paramount and straight from the farm.

How to get there: No idea! But Jane does. This is what she says on her website:

‘We encourage you to either find your way here on foot, park at the top of the lane where the tarmac is and walk either down Mill Lane or even lovelier, through the paths in the wooden quarry. All you have to do is keep the canal to your right as you’re walking towards us and you’ll get there. Our postcode is OX5 3HW’.

The road pictured is found behind the cottage. Follow it for 10 minutes and you’ll find Cream Tea Mecca

You have to admit, it looks like a pretty cool way to spend a Sunday afternoon (*sigh*). If you make it down there, say hi on behalf of Muddy Stilettos and send us a snap of your cream tea!
