The luckiest pigs in the county – until, well, you know…

Sometimes these posts work more by  fate than design. I received an email from Helen MacKellar from Orchard View Farm in Little Meadle (Bucks) a few weeks ago telling me about her award-winning meats. The exact same day my mum was rhapsodising about the best sausages she had ever tasted. They happened to be from…. well, you get it.

They really are like pigs in muck!

So I went down to Orchard View Farm yesterday to have a look at the farm, meet Helen (wonderwoman – she’s running the farm on maternity leave!), and meet her rare breed pigs. Honestly, these porkers look so happy they’re virtually stand up comedians, roaming and snuffling around in the Buckinghamshire air.

All piggytastic, but why bother writing about them? You’re probably miles away, right? Aha! I’m not so stupid after all. Unusually for a farm, Helen sells her food direct to customers – pork, lamb and turkey are all on the menu in whatever cuts you want, with deer to come soon, and the prices are really reasonable. I tried the free range pork recipe for which she won her Great Taste 3 star gold award (the tasting equivalent of a Michelin 3 star restaurnant!) and it was absolutely amazing. She made my crackling look like marshmallow.
